On the day of the Notre Dame fire, I was in my studio. I was working on some new paintings about growth, renewal, and gardens (more on those coming soon), but all I could think about was that beautiful cathedral burning in Paris. It was gut-wrenching to think that one of the cultural treasures of our civilization might not survive.
I set aside the delicate green and pink panels I had underway and made the painting you see above.
I’m so happy that Notre Dame will be rebuilt. For me, this painting will always be a reminder of my in-the-moment response to the destruction of beauty.

I’m Janet Taylor. In my paintings and prints, I take those gifted moments–a whispered reveal of structure, or a passing glance of color and light–and give them permanent form. You can read more about me and my thoughts on art on my about page.
Here on the blog I share inside looks at my process, studio news and thoughts about living with art.
